Cabin tiers across the Pacific market
Basic, Main, Comfort+, Premium Economy, Business, First. Four hours to Hawaii is not 15 hours to Sydney — the upgrade math is different.
Tier definitions used on this site
- Basic Economy: lowest fare bucket. Restrictions vary by carrier and route. Always check carry-on rules.
- Main / Standard Economy: full economy benefits — seat selection, full overhead bag, changeable for a fee.
- Comfort+ / Premium / Economy Plus: extra-legroom economy. Same seat width, extra pitch.
- Premium Economy: separate cabin, wider seat, more pitch, dedicated service. Only on widebody.
- Business: lie-flat seat on long-haul, recliner on short-haul. Lounge access.
- First: only published on a few US carriers; on widebody trans-Pacific it's the top suite.
Hawaii routes (4–5 hours, narrowbody and widebody)
- Basic Economy: usually worth it on Hawaii routes because carry-on is permitted (vs mainland Basic). Skip if your dates are inflexible.
- Comfort+ upgrade: ~$60–$120 one-way. Worth it for tall travellers and overnight return flights.
- First class (US carrier-style domestic First): ~$200–$400 upgrade over economy on day-of. Recline is real but not lie-flat.
Trans-Pacific (10–15 hours, widebody)
- Premium Economy: the sweet spot. 38" pitch and a leg-rest changes the next-day functional state. At under $1,400 RT it's a clear win.
- Business: lie-flat changes arrival completely. JL, NH, QF and NZ Business are excellent.
- First on Singapore Airlines or Korean Air: top of the market but rarely shows on US itineraries unless you transit.
Where the upgrade is not worth it
- Premium Economy on a 4-hour Hawaii route — not enough flight time to amortise.
- Business on a 1-hour inter-island hop — there isn't really a Business cabin worth naming.
- Comfort+ on Hawaiian's 717 inter-island — entire flight is < 35 minutes.
