The HNL hub split

Hawaii's mainland gateway capacity is heavily skewed to Honolulu — about 70% of mainland → Hawaii passenger volume lands at HNL. Maui, Kona, and Lihue split the rest. Result: HNL fares hold a roughly 18% discount over same-day direct neighbor-island arrivals.

The play: book your mainland leg into HNL, then a $89 inter-island hop to OGG/KOA/LIH on Hawaiian. Total often beats the direct even with the layover. Works best March, May, October.

Trans-Pacific via HNL

SFO/LAX/SEA → HND or NRT direct fares spike during cherry-blossom season (late March – mid April). Routing via HNL on Hawaiian metal (HA Premium Cabin on the A321neo to HNL, then JL or NH onward in J) can be cheaper and avoids the worst peak buckets.

SFO → AKL via Fiji

Fiji Airways' SFO → NAN flight feeds nearly daily onward NAN → AKL service. Booked as one ticket, the total can come in $200–$400 under the direct SFO → AKL fare in shoulder season. Watch the 4-hour-plus layover; choose the morning bank if you can.

LAX → SYD via Tahiti

Air Tahiti Nui (TN) runs LAX → PPT daily. Connecting PPT → AKL or PPT → SYD on partner code-shares is occasionally cheaper than direct LAX → SYD, especially in October. Bonus: you can stop in Tahiti.

When stretching loses

• Connections in winter (Dec–Feb) — weather delays compound across two segments.
• USDA inspection bottlenecks on HNL → mainland in summer add 30+ min unpredictably.
• Same-day connections with under 90 min in HNL are too tight if your inbound is from the west coast in the late afternoon.
